The story takes place in a distant and small village, Kurkureu around 1924. A young and ambitious guy Duishen, who owns the teaching profession, after completing his military service, comes to his native place, and there he wants to open an educational institution in order to teach local children to read and write.
But the residents do not at all understand why this is necessary, and how a letter can help in their life and in their work on the field. Most, and maybe all of the local residents are completely illiterate, and this is probably why they are so resistant to the opening of the school. Fortunately, Duishen manages to persuade the majority, and he receives consent to teach children to read and write.
