My Favourite Picture
Art plays a great role in people’s lives. Some people express themselves through art, others find inspiration in it or simply admire artworks. As for me, I find pleasure in seeing or hearing the creations of famous artists, writers, musicians. I think that art is everywhere around us. Some people simply see it, while others don’t. One of my favourite pastimes is visiting museums, art galleries and any temporary or permanent exhibitions, where I can observe interesting paintings.
However, my favourite painting is Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, which can be found in the Louvre only. I’m sure everyone knows this painting, as there are numerous copies of Mona Lisa seen in ads and stores. In my opinion, it’s a charming portrait of a mysterious woman. I wish I could visit the Louvre Museum in Paris one day and see this picture with my own eyes. They say that the painter drew a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, who was the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Mona from Italian means “my lady” or “madam”. In other words, it was a polite way to address a woman in medieval Italy. Looking at this picture, I realize that this woman has tried to send her spectators the most enigmatic look and smile.
Many scholars argue on the meaning of her smile. Some say, she had a sad smile, others believe it was a smile of contentment. Thus, the mystery of Lisa del Giocondo’s smile is still unsolved. I’ve heard that the picture has been occasionally stolen from the museum but it was found and brought back.
Today, Mona Lisa is kept behind a bulletproof glass under the all-day surveillance.
