Judo arises on the basis of martial art jujutsu, one of the traditional Martial Arts of Japan. Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, was educated in schools of Jiu-Jitsu ( "art of flexibility") for many years and then created his own system, which he called jiu-up ( "path flexibility").
