America - part of the world, uniting two continents, North America and South America. This part of the world also known as the New Light. America is named, apparently, by the name of Amerigo Vespucci, the Florentine traveler. He, in turn, was christened in honor of St. Emeric. The word "America" is often used to describe one of the States of this part of the world - USA.
