In 1970, American actor and director Sam Wanamaker founded the Shakespeare Globe Foundation to raise funds for the restoration of the famous theater of the time of William Shakespeare. Initially, his idea was to build a theater directly on the site where the first "Globe" was located. However, this proved impossible, partly because the exact location was unknown, partly because the Thames was wider in Shakespeare's time and building on the same site meant distance from the embankment. For 17 years, the Shakespeare Globe Foundation fought for a place on Southwark Quay, and only in 1986 was the result achieved.
