Задание 1. Прочитайте текст. NATURE RADAR. Bats, which are blind, have an echo-location system. They use hearing as men use sight. They send out sound waves in the form of squeaks, at frequencies ranging from 20,000 to 120,000 cycles per second, far beyond human limits. Then they listen for echoes made by the sound, These sound wave guide their movements, warn of obstacles, and help them to locate and catch the insects which they feed on. Experiments in the 18th century proved bats could fly and feed safely even if blind. But it was not until 1941, when radar was invented, that a bat’s extraordinary hearing ability was really understood. The Frog. When a tadpole turns into a frog its fishlike characteristics are transformed and a major change takes place in the structure of the head. The eardrum grows and takes over the work of the lung. The middle ear, adapted for life in water, is replaced by one capable of hearing noises in the air. The frog must, however, still remain close to water or its sensitive eardrums if not regularly immersed would dry out. The tadpole, which is confined to water, uses its lungs as resonators which pick up underwater vibrations. The Fish. Fish that can hear have a middle ear comprising in air bladder, linked to the inner ear by a series of small bones. This bladder vibrates. When touched by sound waves. The bones carry the vibrations to the inner ear, where they are transformed into nerve impulses leading to the brain.
