Ex.29. Complete the story by putting the verbs in brackets into the correct tense. You can choose from the Present Perfect, Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect or Past Perfect Continuous. My English is really getting better. I (try) to learn the language since 2005, but only recently have I been able to make some real progress. By the time I started high school in 2008, I (study) the language for almost three years; however, I was only able to introduce myself and utter a few memorized sentences. For a couple more years, I (struggle) through grammar and vocabulary lessons, which made absolutely no difference. Nothing worked, so I decided to study abroad.
I (find) an exchange program in England that (sound) like the perfect answer. I (stay) with a host family for one month. It was a huge disappointment! I (sit) there the whole time staring at the host mother and father hoping that there would be some breakthrough. Nothing.
When I returned, I mentioned to a friend that I (have) problems with the language for years. He recommended that I spend a year in an English speaking country. I decided to go abroad again. I (research) exchange programs for a couple of weeks and finally (decide) on a school in the United States.
Well, it (work). I (live) and (study) in the U.S. for more than two years. I (stay) here for at least another year before I return home. By then, I should be completely fluent.

The Thames is not a long river. It is three hundred and thirty kilometres long and it runs into the sea. The English people call it “the Father of London”. London began on the Thames. When we go in a ship up the Thames we pass under London Bridge, the Tower Bridge and others. There is a museum of old ships on the Thames. These ships are from the history of Great Britain. One of these ships, the “Discovery”, went to the South Pole in 1901 — 1904.
If we go down the Thames we pass the port of London and get to Greenwich — a very old town. We can see the place where the Greenwich Meridian passes.

We always hear many students complain about having to study math or chemistry, even when they don't want to become a doctor or an engeneer. And it's possible to understand, it is actually true, the majority of the students won't even use math in the future. however, it is still important to study compulsory subjects. First of all, there are thousands of jobs that require knowing mathematics, even the final exam mark will matter to a college or the university you'll apply to. Actually, everyone uses math whether they realize it or not. In our everyday life we count in stores to find out how much something costs, and in the future things like that will stay important as well. Math helps us with other subjects, like physics and chemistry. A lot of math problems help the students to solve tasks in physics.
