In 1962, the film Dr No was released and James Bond exploded onto the big screen. Cinema goers across the world were charmed by the smooth talking secret agent, and more films quickly followed. Based on books by Ian Fleming, the films show the exciting adventures of the world’s most famous spy. There are now 23 official James Bond films, making it the longest running film series in the world.
Sean Connery was the first actor to play James Bond. He was very popular with his natural charm and good looks, starring in 6 films including Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever. Since Sean Connery, 5 other actors have played James Bond with different amounts of success. Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and most recently Daniel Craig have successfully played the character in more than one film. George Lazenby, on the other hand, was only Bond once in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
James Bond films include fast cars, cool gadgets and beautiful women. Almost every film has an incredible car chase with cars driving on two wheels, jumping over rivers or sliding across frozen lakes! Bond’s cars are usually fitted with missiles and ejector seats, but it isn’t just the cars that have gadgets – Bond himself is known to use exploding pens, a laser watch and even a flying jet pack!
Over the years, James Bond has appeared in television shows, radio plays, comics and video games. People can’t get enough of the character. The talented actors, the incredible action and the clever plots all come together to make really unforgettable films. A new film is made every few years, changing in style so as to stay fresh and modern. James Bond has been saving the day for over 50 years – and he’s got no plans to stop anytime soon!
