Судя по заданию вы проходите фразовые глаголы. В этом случае хорошим вариантом будет смотреть объяснения в английском словаре. Например

1) (of an object) to be removed from a place where it is fixed - выдирать, отдирать.
2) (of dirt, a mark, etc.) to be removed from something by washing or cleaning - удалить, убрать

1) to return - возвращаться к (прежнему)
2) to become popular or successful again - вернуться (о моде например)

to return to somebody’s memory - вернуться, вспоминать
Окей, посмотрим теперь на задания.
1) He came…. this chessboard in an antiques shop.
Он ... шахматную доску в антикварном магазине.
скорее всего, он нашел ее случайно. Т.е. это come across
He came across this chessboard in an antiques shop.
2) They came … to their home town because they missed it.
Они ... в их родной город, потому что соскучились по нему. Скорее всего "они вернулись", т.е. come back
They came back to their home town because they missed it.
3) John came … to see my new stereo.
Джон ... посмотреть на (не знаю как перевести стерео, но скорее всего это проигрыватель или что-то в этом роде)
Тут вероятнее всего - пришел в гости, поэтому come round
John came round to see my new stereo.
4) His new book has come… recently.
Его новая книга ... недавно.
Раз книга, то "была опубликована", а значит come out
His new book has come out recently.
5) She came … to the country a month ago.
Она ... в страну месяц назад
Скорее всего, она вернулась месяц назад, т.е. come back
She came back to the country a month ago.
Впрочем если какой-то из пунктов по смыслу будет вам казаться более подходящим, чем предложенный мною, смело меняйте :)
