Task 1. Read the text carefully and do the task [5] I love holidays. They are the best thing in the world. The only problem is they are always too short. Even summer holidays at school aren’t long enough. I recently had an eight-week holiday and it flew by. It seems as though time goes quickly when we are on holiday, and slowly when we are at school or work. I always really look forward to holidays – even one-day holidays are great. I live in a country that has many national holidays, so there’s always a break around the corner. I feel sorry for some workers who only get two or three weeks holiday a year. They can’t do anything or go anywhere. I love holidays even if I don’t go away. Staying at home is just as good as going on holiday somewhere. Sometimes going on holiday is stressful.

Read the definitions and find the words-answers in the text:

1. an period of leisure and relaxation, especially one spent away from home or in travelling 

2. a period of seven days 

3. a place for educating children 

4. the warmest season of the year 

5. a person who does a specified type of work 

Task 2. Read the text carefully and write TRUE (T) or FALSE (F) for these sentences. [5]

1. The Olympic Games began less than 2000 years ago.

2. The games took place every 6 years at Olympia.

3. There were chariot races.

4. The Games weren’t popular.

5. The competition lasted five days.

The Olympic Games have a very long history. They began more than 2000 years ago in Greece. The Greeks were very fond of music, plays and all kinds of physical exercises. The games took place every four years at Olympia. All the cities in Greece sent their best athletes to take part in the Olympic Games. The strongest athletes ran, jumped, wrestled, threw a discus, and were boxing. There were also chariot races. The Games were very popular, thousands of Greeks used to watch them. It was a tradition to stop wars during the Olympic Games. The competition lasted five days. The winners got olive wreaths. It was the highest honor. When the champions came home, the people greeted them with flowers.
