The International Tchaikovsky Competition is a
world-famous classical music competition. It is held in

were Van Cliburn, an American pianist (D)

and Valery Klimov, a Russian violinist… In 1962, cello
players started competing alongside pianists and
violinists, and in 1966, the vocal division was added.
The competition is named after the famous Russian
composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose most
well-known pieces are his "Children's Album", the
ballets "Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake", and the operas
"Eugene Onegin" and "The Queen of Spades".
Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto is (E) played
at the final round of the competition.
