Николай Николаевич Миклухо-Маклай родился 17 июля 1846 года в селе Языково Боровицкого уезда Новгородской губернии в семье железнодорожного инженера. Его прадедом был запорожский казак. Когда семья переехала в Петербург, Николай после окончания учебы в гимназии посещает лекции на физико-математическом факультете Петербургского университета. Оттуда он был отчислен и будущий этнолог едет на учебу в Германию, вступает в Гейдельбергский университет. Но уже через год Миклухо-Маклай понимает, что хочет заниматься другим и переводится в Лейпцигский университет на медицинский факультет. Позже снова меняет место учебы - на этот раз в Йенском университете Николай изучает анатомию животных. Закончив обучение и совершив путешествие по Красному морю, он в 1869 году возвращается в Россию, где начинает заниматься научной деятельностью.

В 1882 году ученый возвращается в Россию и планирует строительство морской станции и русского поселения в Новой Гвинее для исследований. Но Александра III отказал ему. Год назад Николай Николаевич покидает Россию и возвращается в Австралию.
