Leonardo da Vinci was an artist and engineer. His famous paintings are the Mona Lisa (1503–19) and the Last Supper (1495–98). Leonardo’s father, Ser Piero, was a rich person, and his mother, Caterina, was a young poor woman. Leonardo grew up in his father’s house, where he got the usual elementary education of that day: reading, writing, and arithmetic.When he was about 15, his father found a teacher for him - artist Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo studied painting and sculpture. In 1472 Leonardo became a member of the painters’ guild of Florence. There are many pen and pencil drawings from this period.
