Until a few years ago, you couldn't enter Nepal except on foot. There were no roads into Nepal, and no airfields. Anyone who wanted to visit the country walked across the mountains, or carried by porters. All goods, too, were taken into the country in the same way, along narrow and difficult mountain paths. Sometimes they were lost on the way. After people and goods were carried into and out of Nepal in this way for hundreds of years, the airplane has arrived. An airfield were built near Katmandu, the capital of Nepal, where small planes can land when the weather allows it. Passengers and important goods began to be taken into and out of Nepal by air. Today, there is a regular air-service between Nepal and India, but, of course, heavy or very big goods cannot be put in the small airplanes which alone can use the airfield near Katmandu; and the weather often makes flying impossible. Now a road is built from India to Nepal. It was finished a few years ago. It cannot be used by trucks or big cars, but jeeps can be driven along it if they go carefully. In the next few years, the road will probably be made wider and better. Of course, this road runs through very beautiful country a lot of which are covered with thick forest. Great mountains and rushing rivers are crossed as the road turns its way up on to the "Roof of the World", as it is called.
