By the middle of the 19th century, almost all of the existing mandatory figures were formed, as well as the techniques for their implementation. At the first Ice Skating Congress in 1871, figure skating was recognized as a sport, and 11 years later, the first official figure skating championship was held. In 1890, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the skating rink in the Yusupov Garden, all the stars of figure skating gathered in St. Petersburg, and the resulting competition had the status of an “unofficial world championship”. The demonstrated international scope allowed the first official world figure skating championship to be held in St. Petersburg in 1896.
