One day an elephant was walking by the river. On
his way he saw a little bird. The elephant had seen
birds before. He liked watching them fly A over
the river. They were much faster than he was. The
elephant B often wanted to be able to move so
quickly.
But this bird was not flying at all. It was lying
on the ground with its legs in the air. It looked
tired. This was the first time the elephant had ever
seen a bird doing something so strange.
"What are you doing?” asked the elephant. "I am
holding up the sky,” the bird answered, “I heard
that it may fall today.” The elephant laughed.
"You? Holding up the sky? Look how big it is! It is
bigger than me. You couldn't even hold me up
with those thin legs!”
"These are the only legs I have,” said the bird,
"Maybe I cannot hold up the sky by E myself , but I
am doing what I can.”
