I moved with my family from the city to a town on the coast last year. My father’s a doctor and
he was offered a new job here. He thought it was better for us to live in a small town where the
air is cleaner.
I love the place! It’s so peaceful. From my bedroom window, I’ve got a beautiful view of the
harbour. I always watch the small fishing boats leaving as the sun comes up. The town is full of
traditional shops and historical buildings. There’s also a museum, a castle and some beautiful
gardens. It’s great because everything is close at hand. It takes me just 5 minutes to walk from
my house to the beach.
At first, I didn’t like the slow pace of life here. I felt isolated and missed the hustle and bustle of
the city. Now though, I never feel bored! I’ve made lots of friends and I love life here. There are
a lot of things to do. Most days, I go swimming in the sea or cycling with my friends along
country lanes. It’s amazing here!

At the beginning of the 19th century a little boy was born in the family of John Dickens, a clerk at an office in Portsmouth, and was named Charles. He had a sister who was older than himself, arid there were several other children in the family. When Charles was seven, he was sent to school. He was not a strong child. He did not like to play cricket or football and spent all his free time reading. In 1821 the family went to London and little Charles left behind him the happiest years of his childhood. His father was in money difficulties, and the family became poorer and poorer. The boy had to give up his studios. Mr.Dickens was put into a debtors' prison. Little Charles learned to know all the horrors and cruelty of a large capitalist city. He had to go to work at a blacking factory. He worked there from morning till night. When his father came out of prison, Charles was sent to school for some time. Soon he got work as a clerk. The he learned stenography and became a reporter; in Parliament. And the scar he received from an exploding bottle of pop.
