The predecessors of newspapers are traditionally considered to be news reports spread in ancient Rome about the events that took place in the city. Copied by hand scrolls called Acta diurna populi Romani ("Daily Affairs of the Roman People") were hung in the squares and delivered to politicians or just noble citizens. Roman newspapers were wooden boards on which the chronicle of events was written. News reports were usually unofficial, until Julius Caesar ordered the mandatory dissemination of reports on senate meetings, reports of generals and messages from the rulers of neighboring states.
