new year is the most mysterious holiday of all. i’m sure everybody loves it, be it a child or an adult. at the same time it’s a truly international holiday, which is celebrated in different countries according to their long-established traditions.
for example, in japan on december 31st people listen to the bell which strikes 108 instead of traditional twelve. people of panama are rather loud at the new year night. they whistle and shout, turn on the car sirens simply to greet the coming year. in bulgaria the youngest member of the family should sing carols for the guests standing near the christmas tree. to thank the kid all the guests should give him or her little presents. in portugal people bake a special cake on this day with candied fruit and almonds. it’s called a “royal cake”.
perhaps the most habitual thing is to write a letter to santa asking for desired presents. this tradition is widespread in many countries, including great britain.
another british tradition is to write a list of resolutions for the new year. it means that people write a number of things that they wanted to see improved in their lives. for example, some people promise to start going to the gym regularly. others write that they will cut off fast food and start eating only healthy.
after all, it’s not so important how people greet the coming year. the thing that matters is that each year is supposed to bring some new and exciting development in the life of people who believe in miracles.
