Бывший архитектор Альфред Мошер Батс, изобретатель игры, родился в 1899 году. 
Он за свою жизнь повидал бесчисленное множество настольных игр и был их ярым фанатом и истовым коллекционером. Для себя он всегда делил их на 3 категории: игры с числами (лото и бинго), игры со словами (анаграммы) и игры с передвижными фигурами (шашки и шахматы). 
«Проблемой» Альфреда было его редкое качество – симметричный мозг. У крайне малого количества людей оба полушария мозга развиты идентично.
Несимметричности мозга, кстати, мы и обязаны делением человечества на физиков и лириков, гуманитариев и технарей.
А заключалась проблема в том, что Альфреду одинаково легко давались и игра в шахматы, и цифровые задачки, и анаграммы, и буквенные ребусы… 
И вот, за составлением очередной анаграммы у Альфреда промелькнула потрясающая идея: а что если объединить игры со словами и игры с цифрами и сделать из них самую интересную настольную игру в мире? 
Баттс изучил передовицы газеты «Нью-Йорк таймс» на предмет частоты появления букв и провел собственные исследования английского языка, прежде чем разработал первые правила и определил нужное количество букв-фишек.
Альфред скооперировался с Джеймсом Брюно, тоже истинным ценителем настольных игр, и вместе они в 1948 году выпустили первый тираж Scrabble. 
Поставляемые в комплекте буковки позволяли сложить до 147 тысяч слов! 
Но успех к Scrabble пришел не сразу. Первые 4 года Альфред и Джеймс безуспешно пытались доказать гениальность своего творения. 
В итоге им пришлось продать лицензию на игру компании Selchow&Righter. 
И вскоре благодаря эффективной рекламной кампании мир сдался. 
Сегодня Scrabble – абсолютный бестселлер среди настольных игр, ежегодно по ней проводятся чемпионаты. 
Сегодня «скрэбломаны» проживают в каждом третьем американском доме и еще в 122 странах. 
И хотя скрэбл — это игра в слова, лучше всего о ней расскажут числа. 
По всему миру уже распродано более ста пятидесяти миллионов комплектов, а в Северной Америке каждый год реализуется один-два миллиона наборов. 
Легендарный Альфред Мошер Баттс наслаждался собственным изобретением в кругу семьи и друзей до конца своих дней. 
Он ушел из жизни в апреле 1993 года в возрасте 93 лет.
