long - longer - the longest
По этому же правилу образуют степени сравнения 2сложные (т.е. состоящие из 2х слогов) прилагательные, которые оканчиваются на
-Y  happy - happier - the happiest;
-er  clever - cleverer - the cleverest
-ow  narrow - narrower - the narrowest
-le  simple - simpler - the simplest

Остальные двусложные и все другие многосложные образуют степени сравнения с пом.  слов more и the most:
useful - more useful - the most useful
difficult - more difficult - the most difficult

Есть исключения: good - better - the best;  bad - worse - the worst
