The dating rules (were) firmly established.
Boys and girls usually (began) dating in high school.
Of course, they (needed) their parents' permission.
Many teenagers (were) even chaperoned (accompanied by parents).
The boy (met) his date's parents and (talked) with them for a little while.
Then, the young couple usually (left) for a movie, and a soda and snack, which the boy (paid) for.
The young people (observed) curfews and (said) goodnight at the front door.

In the 19..s dating (was) far more casual.
Children (began) dating in junior high school, and many youngsters (had) steady girlfriends or boyfriends.
The younger couples (might be) escorted by their parents, but as soon as they (were) in high school, couples (rebelled) at the idea of being chaperoned.
Dutch treat dating (was) acceptable and because of the teens limited finances, it (occurred) quite frequently.
Girls (called) boys and (asked) for dates.
They even (paid) for dates.
Curfews (were) observed only in a few families.
Today, teenagers (have) more independence in all aspects of dating.
