When Fern came to the kitchen to have her breakfast in the morning, she saw her father with an ax. She asked her mother where Papa had been going with it. Her mother answered that he had gone out to the hoghouse because some pigs had been born the previous night and one of the pigs was a runt. It was very small and weak, and it would never amount to anything. So her father had decided to do away with it. Fern realized that her father was going to kill it and she ran after him. When she saw her father she asked him not to kill the pig. But her father said that she would have to learn to control herself and that he knew more about raising a litter of pigs than she did, he added that a weakling made trouble. But Fern couldn't agree with him and told that that was very unfair, because that was not pig's fault. Her father became very upset too. But finally he agreed with his daughter and asked her to go back to the house and be ready to feed a liitle pig from a bottle, like a baby. When her father came back to the kitchen, he brought a carton with a newborn pig. it was cute and white. When Fern saw it she thought that it was absolutely perfect.
