Most of it is occupied by the Kairngorms ridge and the Northwest Scottish Highlands with narrow glacial valleys and lakes. The largest cities in the country are its capital Edinburgh with the famous castle erected on top of a hill, and Glasgow, known for its rich cultural life. Scotland is the birthplace of golf: the first games in this sport took place on the Old Cors field in St. Andrus in the 15th century.
